What does it mean to be “true-blue?” I was touched by the article about Germany’s patriotism and how it is shown and lived. For some, being a “true-blue” American is to celebrate our country with flags and celebration without critical thought. By without critical thought I mean blindly, not looking at the whole picture and the needs, the challenges, the successes, the failures of all participants and parts. Ken Medema wrote a song called “I See America with the Eyes of Love” –because of love, wanting to address the ills and brokenness. Unfortunately, conspicuous patriotic practices are used enthusiastically because of our blind support of leaders, or in blind venom against those who think differently. I believe that true blue patriotism steps back to the see the whole picture, with a desire to truly make us a nation of the true and the brave.
